Domenico Dolce: Fashion Czar
Domenico Dolce is half of wildly successful Dolce & Gabbana fashion house. He was born on August 13, 1958 in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily. Dolce began designing and tailoring his own clothing when he was only six years old. Dolce first met Stefano Gabbana (born on November 14, 1962) when he called the fashion house Gabbana was working for to inquire about employment.
After the firm hired Dolce, Gabbana took him under his wing and taught him how the design process worked in the fashion house. Just after Dolce was hired Gabbana had to do his mandatory 18 months military service. When Gabbana returned in 1982 they established a designer consulting firm.
Their first collection was shown in October 1985. Working on very little money, Dolce even used a bed sheet from his house as their stage curtain. Sales for their first collection were discouraging that Gabbana cancelled the fabric order. Dolce’s family offered to pay for their costs. As the order cancellation was not received on time due to the Christmas holiday; the fabric was ready for them when they returned to Milan.
More successes came after their first collection and revenues for Dolce & Gabbana hit $1.5 billion in 2011. They have become so successful that they are now having a dispute with the Italian government for allegedly evading millions in corporate taxes.
