Najib Mikati: Business And Dangerous Politics
In countries like the U.S. you have many businessmen who have entered the field of politics. Yet it is nothing like what Najib Mikati has been experiencing throughout his life. You may like him or hate him but Najib Mikati chose to become a political figure in a country where high public officials can lead very risky lives.
Najib has been a prime minister of Lebanon twice. He has his own motivations for serving his country but it wasn’t because he needed the job. Najib was born in November 24, 1955 in Tripoli, Lebanon. He comes from a prominent family in the area and earned an MBA degree at the American University of Beirut.
He co-founded with his brother Taha Investcom, a telecommunications company in 1992. Najib has been a successful businessman he sold the company to MTN Group of South Africa for $5.5 billion in 2006. Being a billionaire he could have lived somewhere else but instead has been involved in politics.
He was appointed prime minister in April 15, 2005 in a caretaker capacity holding office until July 19, 2005. This was after the assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri. He again became prime minister on June 13, 2011 and resigned on March 23, 2013. His leadership like in the previous term was marked with many conflicts among different groups. Tried as he did he couldn’t get everyone to work together with the long deep-seated suspicions between the Sunni (which Najib is part of) and Shi’ite Muslims.
Well even a billionaire can only do so much at the very least he has been trying to bring about unity.
