Media Shy But…
David Thomson is known to be a media shy person in fact he is even considered a camera shy person. Yet it’s hard not to be noticed in the media once in a while if you’re considered a media baron. It’s also his wealth that’s hard not to notice. He and his family are considered among the richest people in the world and the richest in Canada.
David is the chairman of Thomson Reuters. Previous to that he was the chairman of Thomson Corp. a media conglomerate founded by his grandfather Roy Thomson. Upon the death of his father Kenneth in June 2006, control of the family fortune went to David. As has been stipulated in Roy’s succession plan the son of David would one day also run the company. With Thomson Corp.’s acquisition of Reuters, David became the chairman of the merged entity, Thomson Reuters.
He once again stepped into public radar when he became involved in a co-ownership deal helping to buy the National Hockey League’s Atlanta Thrashers team and relocating them to Canada. The team was renamed the Winnipeg Jets.
Outside of business David is a known art collector having a wide range of artwork including works of Pablo Picasso. He also has the world’s top collection of John Constable.
